What to take, where to eat, where to stay, what to do, and a few little secrets on the side. Not unlike your own personal Jiminy Cricket, (minus the worries of the little guy getting smooshed) the Moab Insiders Guide will provide you with all the essentials for a perfect Moab experience


As you float along the Green River through the dramatic corridors of Desolation Canyon, you'll feel as though you've been transported back in time to a place when dinosaurs roamed the earth and the winding river was carving its path through mighty the mountains. You can almost sense it taking place right before your eyes - the landscape remains that pristine. A spectacular scenic flight from Moab, Utah will be your access to this remote rafting adventure, where at times, the splash of the oars hitting the water will be the only sound you hear. As you marvel at the rugged landscape and geologic history, more than 40 million years in the making, you'll get a glimpse of what life was like for Ancient Native American civilizations and later the famous outlaws of the West, including Butch Cassidy. A few sort hikes will show you artifacts left from Fremont tribes, including petroglyph panels etched into the cliffs, and abandoned outlaw hideouts. You'll have plenty of opportunity to jump in and float the lazy stretches of river and also test your whitewater rafting skills on the more that 60 fun-fulled class I-III rapids. This trip is just the right mix of wonder, relaxation and adventure.

Green River Rafting Itinerary

DAY 1 » You will soar over the canyons of the Green River, on a magnificent morning flight, finally landing atop a desert plateau. Enjoy a short van ride or a breathtaking hike to the river's edge. The rafts will launch onto a smooth stretch of the Green River, where you can sit back and soak up the sun or take a deep in the green waters. Once you reach camp, make sure to explore the area, relax or play a game surrounded by the majesty of Utah's Desolation Canyon while your guides prepare a mouthwatering camp dinner.

DAY 2 » The next morning, you will be greeted by a hearty breakfast before hiking a short distance to 1,000-year-old Fremont Native American petroglyphs or maybe an old moonshiner's hideout. Around midday, relish in a delectable riverside buffet lunch. Aboard your oar boat, the river will pick up speed as your guide pilots your though several thrilling Green River rapids. You and your partner may even choose to traverse the rapids on your own in an inflatable kayak.

Day 3 » Hike to a landmark homestead rich in folklore and outlaw history. Experience some of the biggest whitewater on the Green River as you run Wire Fence and Three Fords rapids. Drift into the scenic Gray Canyon, as you leave Desolation Canyon, traversing 40 million years of geologic history in a matter of minutes. Revel in another night camping under a blanket of stars scattered across the southern Utah sky.

Day 4 or 5 » After a peaceful night, the final morning in the canyon will rest in your memory. You'll find amazement in the grandeur of the sublime landscape you have escaped to as shadows play across the towering cliffs of the Green River. Enjoy the last of many exemplary breakfasts before setting off to traverse the last stretches of whitewater. There will be time for an occasional water fight and the calm stretches will offer ample opportunity for swimming, but the journey will wind to an end. After lunch, you'll board the bus with your new friends as you celebrate a successful passage on the one-hour bus ride back to Moab, Utah (arriving approximately 2:30 PM).

ADVENTURE EXTENSION: Get a good night's rest the night before your river trip at The Big Horn Lodge in Moab. Return from your Green River trip and relax for 2 nights in the finer comforts of the Gonzo Inn -- within walking distance of Western's Moab Adventure Center. At mid-morning, after your river trip, enjoy the thrills of a Slickrock Hummer Safari and then take the afternoon to yourself. In the evening, relish in the "Golden Hour" of sunlight with a Sunset Arches N.P. Tour hosted by your guides at the Moab Adventure Center. Finish the night off with a dip in the hot tub and checkout in the morning. *Note: This itinerary is provided as a sample. Daily activities and sights will vary based on weather conditions and guide preferences. Trip length varies from 4 days in June to 5 days in July.

Pre-Trip Travel Information

Beginning in the quaint town of Moab, Utah this trip offers plenty of opportunity for additional adventure, shopping, dining and relaxing. Schedule a few days before or after your trip to explore downtown Moab, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and participate in some unforgettable Moab activities such as an off-road Hummer Safari or canyoneering. At any time before departure, Western can add to your itinerary additional activities, lodging, airport shuttle, and Jeep rental. Simply give us a call and we'll arrange everything for you.

How to Get to Moab
If you're flying, the following options are generally the most common:

  • Fly directly to Moab, Utah (CNY) and
    get a shuttle into town or rent a Jeep
  • Fly to Grand Junction, Colorado (GJT)
    and rent a car (1.5 hour drive)
  • Fly to Salt Lake City, Utah (SLC) and
    rent a car (4 hour drive)

Where and When to Meet
Meet the night prior to your trip for orientation at 8:00 PM. Orientation will take place at Western River Expeditions' Moab Adventure Center, located in the center of town at 225 S Main Street, Moab, Utah 84532 (phone: 435-259-7019). The first day of your trip, you'll need to check out of your accommodations, eat a good breakfast and meet for 6:30 AM departure at the Moab Adventure Center. We'll take a 20-minute bus ride out to the airport and then board a 5-7 seat Cessna aircraft for a 40-minute flight to the river.

Where to Stay
Moab offers plenty of hotel choices in town as well as condominiums and guest homes. Some of the closest hotels include Gonzo Inn, Big Horn Lodge and Best Western Canyonlands. You'll want to reserve at least one night of lodging before your trip.

Post-Trip Travel Information

You'll return to Western's Moab Adventure Center around 2:30 PM the final day of your trip. Depending on your schedule, you may want to reserve at least one night of lodging the final day of your trip. If you will be traveling on but wish to shower before leaving Moab, we can direct you to several locations in town that offer shower facilities.

Tip » After returning to Moab, we highly recommend adding a Sunset Hummer Safari to your itinerary. You'll have time to check into your hotel, relax, eat some dinner, and then experience a one-of-a-kind off-road adventure. You'll ride over incredible sandstone fins out to a beautiful sunset overlook that will take your breath away.
